Pubblichiamo volentieri il racconto dell’esperienza di Sofia, ragazza americana in Italia con il Programma Language Tutor nel 2015

Hello everyone, my name is Sofia, and I am so excited to be able to tell you about the teaching experience that I had in Fermo, Italy through International Experience! I went from January to March of 2015. If you or someone you know is interested in teaching in Italy, I would highly suggest this experience.

As my plane landed on Roman soil, I was filled with emotion. Because this wasn’t my first time to Italy, my feelings of home were confirmed as I traveled through the countryside to Fermo. Before I left, many people told me how brave I was to live with a family that I didn’t know for two months. Much to my delight, my host family was the most amazing family that I could’ve received. They took me in as one of their own children, and took care of me beyond what I know they needed to do. We always had lively discussions at dinner, and they really helped me to not feel homesick because I was “adopted” into their family. Tutoring my two host siblings in English was a delight, and we had the most fun time learning from each other even when it wasn’t a formal “lesson”. When going to any country, I would highly recommend staying with a host family. You truly have the opportunity to become a local and immerse yourself in the culture. The Italian culture is one that I have been thankful to know and practice. From my family in America to my host family in Italy, I’ve been able to begin thinking with a more open mind like the Italians do, experience their daily routines, and have a piece of la bella vita.

The most important aspect of this trip, the main aspect, was getting to teach at an Italian school as a volunteer. I graduated from Baldwin Wallace University with my degree in Early Childhood Education, so I was incredibly interested in being a part of this type of cultural classroom. I was placed at L’Isola Che Non C’e which is a bilingual “scuola maternal” or preschool. What I found most intriguing about the school though was that it featured a 0-6 program meaning that they also included kindergarten into their school. I was one of three native English speakers. There was myself, a teacher from New York who moved to Italy 20 years ago, and a teacher from England amongst four Italian teachers. The children were responsible for learning and speaking English throughout the day as they practiced the calendar routine and curriculum on a daily basis. Because this school was Montessori based, it was much different than anything that I had worked with in the States. The language barrier was difficult for the children at first, but they absorbed English like a sponge, which made it so much more exciting. With the help of International Experience I was able to grow not only as a teacher and do more to develop my skills professionally, but I was able to grow as a person. From this trip I became more independent, understanding of the world around me, and grateful for all that this world has to offer.

Insegnare in Italia grazie a International Experience, un’ esperienza di crescita

Ciao a tutti, il mio nome è Sofia e sono felice di poter raccontare l’esperienza di insegnamento che ho avuto a Fermo, in Italia attraverso International Experience!

Il mio soggiorno a Fermo è durato da gennaio a marzo del 2015. Se siete interessati a insegnare in Italia, consiglio vivamente questa esperienza.

Non appena il mio aereo è atterrato a Roma, sono stata travolta subito da una grande emozione e questo sentimento mi ha accompagnato durante tutto il viaggio, fino ad arrivare a Fermo.

Prima di partire, molte persone mi hanno detto di quanto fossi coraggiosa a vivere per due mesi con una famiglia che non conoscevo. Con mia grande gioia, la mia famiglia è stata la più straordinaria che avessi potuto incontrare.. Mi hanno trattato come una figlia, e si sono presi cura di me. Abbiamo sempre avuto piacevoli conversazioni a cena, e mi hanno davvero aiutata a non sentire la nostalgia di casa, “adottandomi” nella loro famiglia.

Fare da tutor ai miei due “fratelli” ospitanti, aiutandoli ad apprendere la lingua inglese è stato un vero piacere, e ci siamo divertiti tantissimo imparando gli uni dagli altri anche quando non facevamo lezione.

Quando si ha voglia di conoscere un paese nuovo, io consiglio vivamente di soggiornare presso una famiglia ospitante, hai veramente la possibilità di immergerti nella cultura locale e di farne parte.

Sono grata di aver avuto l’opportunità di conoscere la cultura italiana, ho imparato tante cose nuove e ora posso pensare con una mente più aperta, avendo vissuto appieno la routine quotidiana degli italiani, e un pezzo de “la Bella Vita”.

L’aspetto più importante di questo viaggio è stato quello di affiancare gli insegnanti italiani in una scuola come volontaria.

Mi sono laureato alla Baldwin Wallace University in Educazione della prima infanzia, così è stato per me, incredibilmente interessante, poter fare lezione insieme alle maestre in una scuola materna. Mi è stata assegnata L’Isola che non c’è, che è un asilo nido e una scuola materna bilingue.

Io ero uno dei tre madrelingua inglese. Insieme a me c’era un’ insegnante di New York, in Italia da 20 anni, un’ insegnante dell’Inghilterra e quattro insegnanti italiani. I bambini sono coinvolti nell’acquisizione della lingua inglese per tutto l’arco della giornata e nella loro routine scolastica.

Questa scuola si basa sul metodo Montessori, che io in America non conoscevo.

Al mio arrivo c’è stato un attimo di difficoltà per la barriera linguistica tra me e I più piccoli, ma poi hanno assorbito l’inglese come una spugna, e questa cosa per me è stata davvero eccitante.

Con l’aiuto di International Experience sono stata in grado di crescere non solo come insegnante, migliorando le mie capacità professionali, ma sono cresciuta tanto anche come persona.

Grazie a questo scambio culturale sono diventata più indipendente, comprendo meglio il mondo intorno a me, e sono grata per tutto ciò che questo mondo ha da offrire.
